Portable oxygen concentrators are an electronic device used for people suffering from conditions such as emphysema, Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease and other illnesses due to chronic breathing problems. They rely on assisted breathing machines and until recently came in the form of obtrusive, limited big tanks. Portable oxygen concentrators make oxygen from the air and with demand flow or pulse flow by delivering oxygen when the patient inhales. There is a motor inside the machine that allows the concentrator to suck air into the machine, filter out the nitrogen and pass oxygen into the patient’s nostril through a supply tube. He is then able to breathe normally, effortlessly and independently. Recently in May of 2009, it was mandated to allow all United States flights the use of Portable Oxygen Concentrators on board, giving increased flexibility and independence to this particular population. There are many companies that manufacture Portable oxygen concentrators  and range in various sizes and prices. From four pounds to ten pounds, and with an average cost of $3000.00, they offer variety that is suited to each customer’s specifications. When they are fully charged they can last for an average of five hours; a maximum of ten hours and are used primarily for portability: running errands, taking a walk, getting on a plane, etc.

While portable oxygen concentrators are used primarily for portability, the advances of medical science are growing exponentially as the need for assistance to people with chronic breathing problems grows. It’s because of a dependence on POC that patients are able to live independently and resume normal lives.
